Dissolve and pour into above mixture.

DO NOT PUT BACK ON THE STOVE!

Stir 15 to 20-minutes. Let stand 24 hours. Cut into bars. Our thanks to Dallas for his generosity!!

THE SOAP MAKING PROCESS FROM THE OLDEN DAYS

By Dallas Bogan

Reprinted with Permission from Dallas Bogan. This article was published in the Volunteer Times.
I can well remember my grandmother making soap in years gone by. I have been searching for some time the method of this process. I have received permission from the author of the following to write of this procedure. Perhaps many of the readers remember the times of soap making and possibly have been involved in this somewhat ancient craft.

At first the earliest settlers simply brought an abundant supply of soap along with them. The Talbot, a ship chartered by the Massachusetts Bay Company to carry persons and supplies from England to its colonies at Naumbeak, now known as Salem and Boston, listed among its cargo 2 firkins of soap. A firkin is an old measurement which was a wooden, hooped barrel of about nine gallon capacity. John Winthrop, who was to become the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, when writing to his wife in 1630 from Boston included soap in a list of requirements to be brought on her crossing to the New world.

After the colonists were settled and had been able to survive the first years of hardships, they found it more beneficial to make soap themselves using the plentiful amount of wood ashes, an accepted result of their farmstead activities. With also a plentiful supply of animal fat from the butchering of the animals they used for food, the colonists had on hand all the ingredients for soap making. They did not have to rely on waiting for soap to be shipped from England and waste their goods or few pieces of currency in trade for soap.

Soap with some work and luck could be made for free. Soap making was performed as a yearly or semiannual event on the homesteads of the early settlers. As the butchering of animals took place in the fall, soap was made at that time on many homesteads and farms to utilize the large supply of tallow and lard that resulted. On the homes or farms where butchering was not done, soap was generally made in the spring using the ashes from the winter fires and the waste cooking grease, that had accumulated throughout the year.

In making soap the first ingredient required was a liquid solution of potash commonly called lye. The lye solution was obtained by placing wood ashes in a bottomless barrel set on a stone slab with a groove and a lip carved in it. The stone in turn rested on a pile of rocks. To prevent the ashes from getting in the solution a layer of straw and small sticks was placed in the barrel then the ashes were put on top. The lye was produced by slowly pouring water over the ashes until a brownish liquid oozed out the bottom of the barrel. This solution of potash lye was collected by allowing it to flow into the groove around the stone slab and drip down into a clay vessel at the lip of the groove.

Some colonists used an ash hopper for the making of lye instead of the barrel method. The ash hopper was kept in a shed to protect the ashes from being leached accidentally by a rain fall. Ashes were added every so often and water was poured over at intervals to insure a constant supply of lye. The lye dripped into a collecting vessel located beneath the hopper.

The preparation of the fats or grease to be used in forming the soap was the next step. This consists of cleaning the fats and grease of all other impurities contained in them.

The cleaning of fats is called rendering and is the smelliest part of the soap making operation. Animal fat, when removed from the animals during butchering, must be rendered before soap of any satisfactory quality can be made from it. This rendering removes all meat tissues that still remain in the fat sections. Fat obtained from cattle is called tallow while fat obtained from pigs is called lard.

If soap was being made from grease saved from cooking fires, it was also rendered to remove all impurities that had collected in it. The waste cooking grease being saved over a period of time without the benefits of refrigeration usually became rancid, This cleaning step was very important to make the grease sweeter. It would result in a better smelling soap. The soap made from stale fats or grease would work just as well as soap made from sweet and clean fats but not be as pleasant to have around and use.

To render, fats and waste cooking grease were placed in a large kettle and an equal amount of water was added. Then the kettle was placed over the open fire outdoors. Soap making was an outside activity. The smell from rendering the fats was too strong to wish in anyone's house. The mixture of fats and water were boiled until all the fats had melted. After a longer period of boiling to insure completion of melting the fats. The fire was stopped and into the kettle was placed another amount of water about equal to the first amount of water. The solution was allowed to cool down and left over night. By the next day the fats had solidified and floated to the top forming a layer of clean fat. All the impurities being not as light as the fat remained in water underneath the fat.

In another large kettle or pot the fat was placed with the amount of lye solution determined to be the correct amount. This is easier said than done. We will discuss it more later. Then this pot was placed over a fire again outdoors and boiled. This mixture was boiled until the soap was formed. This was determined when the mixture boiled up into a thick frothy mass, and a small amount placed on the tongue caused no noticeable "bite". This boiling process could take up to six to eight hours depending on the amount of the mixture and the strength of the lye.

Soap made with wood ash lye does not make a hard soap but only a soft soap. When the fire was put out and the soap mixture was allowed to cool, the next day revealed a brown jelly like substance that felt slippery to the touch, made foam when mixed with water, and cleaned. This is the soft soap the colonists had done all their hard to produce. The soft soap was then poured into a wooden barrel and ladled out with a wooden dipper when needed.

To make hard soap, common salt was thrown in at the end of the boiling. If this was done a hard cake of soap formed in a layer at the top of the pot. As common salt was expensive and hard to get, it was not usually wasted to make hard soap. Common salt was more valuable to give to the livestock and the preserving of foods. Soft soap worked just as well as hard and for these reasons the colonists, making their own soap, did not make hard soap bars.

In towns and cities where there were soap makers making soap for sale, the soap would be converted to the hard soap by the addition of salt. As hard bars it would be easier to store and transport. Hard bars produced by the soap maker were often scented with oils such as lavender, wintergreen, or caraway and were sold as toilet soap to persons living in the cities or towns.

Hard soap was not cut into small bars and wrapped as soap is sold today. Soap made by the soap makers was poured into large wooden frames and removed when cooled and hard.

The amount of soap a customer wanted was cut from the large bar. Soap was sold usually by the pound. Small wrapped bars were not available until the middle of the 19th century.

Another thought to remember is the soap making procedure described is not only how the homesteading colonial women made their soap. Soap making was generally a task the women did. This was essentially the method used by all soap makers of the period. Soap making was always considered one of the most difficult jobs on the farm or homestead.
For more details see http://www.goodscentscandles.us

Christmas Items and new soaps posted

With the holidays upon us, don't forget to stop by and see our new soaps, candles, tarts, bath salts, shampoo, and more at our store site. Aromatherapy is the amalgamation of two words "aroma" and "therapy" that mean "fragrance" and "healing" respectively.

Essential oils, extracted from plants and its parts form the crux of aromatherapy. These oils stimulate the brain, effect our body, hereby improving our mood, relaxing and rejuvenating us. Extracted in various ways, they are highly concentrated and should not be used directly onto the body. They should be blended with carrier oils such as olive oil, sweet almond oil, etc, for best results.

If you are new, then explore this world of fragrance at home with a handful of inexpensive oils. To avoid allergic reactions to essential oils, perform a skin test before you indulge yourself. Take a drop of the oil on a cotton swab. Apply it to the inside of your wrist or inner elbow. Cover the area with a bandage and avoid washing for 24 hours. If there is no itching or redness, oil is safe for external use.

Basic oils that any beginner can start with:

- Lavender - Most basic and very important oil in aromatherapy. I used to think the very same way until I actually used a bar of handmade soap and not only saw the difference but FELT the difference. Now I hope to never use another commercially made bar of soap again.

Generally, the comercial soaps carried at most chain stores, etc. are full of chemical additives, additives that not only dry out your skin but can lead to rashes and other irritations. This is not only because of the synthetic additives in the soap but also because most soap companies take the glycerin out of their soap.

IF the soap company does put in some natural ingredients along with its synthetic ones, they do so in such small quantities as for it to be inconspicuous in the soap. Its main purpose is to catch the eye of the consumer and give them the illusion that this soap is more natural. If you read the ingredient labels though, the soap is still primarily made with synthetic ingredients.

Using commercial soaps over time leave your skin dried out, sensitive and feeling like its never clean. Natural handmade soap, that only uses natural ingredients, can restore the moisture to your skin, while still getting you clean. You will be amazed at the difference!

What is Handmade Soap?

Handmade soap is a cleanser made with simple ingredients that are good for your skin. In the handcrafted soap making process, oils and fats are combined with lye to produce soap and glycerin. Modern soap is still made by this basic process, but a handcrafted soap offers many unique benefits for your skin.

Handcrafted Soap is made by combining oils or fats with lye and water. The resulting reaction creates soap and glycerin. Soap cleanses the skin while glycerin moisturizes it. Many handmade soaps also contain butters and other oils to increase the moisturizing effect of the sooap and herbs and other natural items for an exfoliant.

To see the full article see: http://www.goodscentscandles.us/whybuyhandsoap.php
For more details see http://www.goodscentscandles.us

History of Candles and Candle Making

The name candle comes from the Latin candere meaning "to shine." A candle is a light source usually consisting of an internal wick which rises through the center of a column of solid fuel. Prior to the mid 19th century, the majority of candles were tallow (a byproduct of beef fat rendering). The fuel in a candle now is nearly always some form of wax, with paraffin wax being the most common. Soy and vegetable-based candles such as palm wax are also available, however, and are growing in popularity as the "green segment" of the consumer market grows ever larger, and since 9/11 as Americans increasingly preferred products produced in the heartland of American rather than in the oil markets of the Middle East.

Candles were used up until the early 1900s as the single source for artificial light. Candles also have a rich tradition in religious services in many faiths through-out history. Today, the candle is no longer the single source of light but is used abundantly in religious services as well as in birthday celebrations, holidays, and home decorations.
EARLY CANDLES

While no date can be definitely pinned down for the development of the first candle, we do know that candles were developed independently in many countries. Accounts of candle use date back to ancient times, with Biblical references as early as the tenth century BC. The Egyptians and Cretans made candles from beeswax, as early as 3000 BC. The Chinese created candles from whale fat during the Qin Dynasty (221–206 BC). In early China and Japan, tapers were made with wax from insects and seeds, wrapped in paper. Qin Shi Huang (259–210 BC) was the first Emperor of the Chinese Qin Dynasty (221–206 BC). His burial grounds, which were rediscovered in the 1970s twenty-two miles east of Xi'an by Chinese peasants digging a well, co ntained candles made from whale fat. Yak butter was used for candles in Tibet. In India, wax from boiling cinnamon was used for temple candles.

During the first century AD, indigenous people from the northwestern region of the United States and Canada used oil from a type of fish called the eulachon or "candlefish", a type of smelt which is found from Oregon to Alaska, for illumination. A simple candle could be made by putting the dried fish on a forked stick and then lighting it.

To read the remainder of the article on the history of candles and candle making go to: http://www.goodscentscandles.us/candlehistory.php
For more details see http://www.goodscentscandles.us

Online Craft Fair Participation

Good Scents Candles & More
See us at the Marketplace Square online Craft fair from July 9th to July 24th. Now you will have two places where you can buy our products - at our website at http://www.goodscentscandles.us or at the auction mall.

Please look for our store. Our store description reads as follows:

Good Scents Candles custom handmades all natural richly scented soy candles in containers, votives, pillars, and speciality shapes. With over 70 fragrances and at least six different types of containers, we can customize a candle especially for you. All natural vegetable soy candles are long lasting, burning at least twice as long as a comparable paraffin candle, soot-free, non-polluting, and are made from the soybean oil grown by soybeans from Iowa and other midwest and southern states. Soy candles also hold their scent down to the last drop of wax so they smell as good at the end of the candle as they did at the beginning.
Good Scents Candles also handmakes all natural soaps, using ingredients such as coconut oil, palm oil, soy oil, olive oil, mango butter, cocoa butter, shea butter, glycerin, goats milk, oatmeal, aloe vera, etc. and scented with natural body safe fragrances or essential oils. Our soaps come in a variety of shapes and sizes - from molds with Celtic designs, lighthouses, Victorian designs, heart shaped and embossed with flowers, as well as the more primitive look of handcut rectangular bars with no design except that done with color and various added botanical items. Additionally, we make a shea butter soy lotion that is great for moisturizing your skin with no greasy or oily residue. We also produce a line of bath salts, including Dead Sea bath salts and pink Himalayan Mountain bath salts, These bath salts are not diluted with epsom salts or other salts but are 100% pure.
Good Scents Candles is a family owned and operated business located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. We take great pride and joy in producing the finest product we can that will benefit your life and bring you enjoyment.
For more details see http://www.goodscentscandles.us

Celtic Design Soaps

We are offering a selection of different Celtic designs in our molded soaps currently.
